PLYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) - Government officials, Mashpee Wampanoag Nation representatives and environmental groups are set to mark the return of river herring to Town Brook in Plymouth.

Plymouth officials removed the Billington Street Dam and replaced it with an arch bridge earlier this year. Officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say the removal of the dam gives river herring and American eels better access to traditional spawning and nursery areas.

Federal, state, and local officials, Mashpee Wampanoag representatives and environmentalists will meet at the site Friday as 150,000 river herring are expected to be migrating up the brook to spawn.

The event is scheduled to take place at the Billington Street site at 11 a.m.
