SALEM, N.H. (AP) - Salem police now say they do not believe an attempted baby abduction took place in the New Hampshire community and they believe the neighborhood and community are safe.

Police released a statement on Friday after what they described as a brief but intense investigation.

On Thursday, a caller told police that a man ran away with a baby stroller containing an 8-month-old child on paths near Zachary’s Crossing and Route 111, on the edge of the Windham Town Forest.

Police had said the parent was able to grab the baby and the suspect took off, heading on a path into Windham.

But police now say they do not believe the incident happened and the case is under investigation.
