BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (AP) - Fire officials in Burrillville are crediting a passer-by for saving a local man from a burning home.

Tim Durand told WJAR-TV that he was driving on Wallum Lake Road Thursday night when he noticed the house was on fire. He says he ran to the house, kicked the front door in and pulled a man who had been sleeping from the home.

Durand says he didn’t hear any smoke detectors going off when he entered the house.

Firefighters from several departments responded to the blaze at about 11 p.m. Officials say it appears to have started in the garage and spread to the rest of the home.

The cause is under investigation.
