DARROW, La. (AP) - The Ascension Parish sheriff says four men are charged in a fatal shoot-out that took place near a Baptist church where people were having Bible study.

Sheriff Jeff Wiley says nearly 50 shots were fired Thursday.

A deacon at Hopeful Baptist Church says he thought he was hearing firecrackers.

Wiley says 23-year-old Isaac “Ike” Prestley, of Darrow, died after being shot in the hip; and 19-year-old Clarence Ruth was wounded by a shot to the leg.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1fj5Wij ) Ruth and three others are charged with second-degree murder.

Each has been given bail of $1 million or more, and they remained in Ascension Parish Detention Center. It was not immediately clear whether they have attorneys.

Ruth’s father Clarence Ruth Sr., says his son did not shoot his friend Prestley.
