WASHINGTON (AP) - Students from the University of Alabama are among those participating in a competition to build a car that’s more environmentally friendly.

The EcoCAR 3 competition is for engineering students. They’ll try to develop auto powertrains that reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The teams will try to balance those improvements with maintaining consumer demand in areas like performance, utility and safety.

The competition was established by the U.S. Energy Department and General Motors. The students will be working on a popular Chevrolet muscle car, the Camaro.

Part of the goal is to develop the next generation of U.S. automotive engineers.
