AUXERRE, France (AP) - Metz will be back in the French topflight next season after beating Auxerre 3-0 to cap a remarkable turnaround.

Saturday’s victory leaves Metz 15 points above fourth-place Caen with four rounds remaining and ensures back-to-back promotions.

Metz was relegated from Ligue 1 in 2008 and matters grew worse five years later when it dropped down to the third tier of French football.

Coach Albert Cartier says “it’s the reward of an enormous project put into place by the president Bernard Serin. I am very happy for this club which has suffered and come back to the highest level of football.”

Midfielder Ahmed Kashi shaved off Serin’s moustache in celebration, as promised.

Metz remains on course for the Ligue 2 title and has a 10-point advantage over second-place Lens.
