AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud says the military is boosting its efforts to use shoes made in Maine.

In a letter sent to Michaud on Friday, the Department of Defense outlined plans to potentially offer New Balance Athletic Shoes to military recruits.

Michaud’s spokesman says the footwear company has three factories in Maine that employ around 900 people.

An amendment commonly known as the “Berry Amendment” requires the DOD give preference to domestic manufacturers. In the letter, the DOD wrote that it plans to assess the Maine-made shoes and offer them to recruits if they meet military standards.
