HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - The Penn Center is inducting new members into its 1862 Circle that recognizes those who embody the spirit of the center and are advocates for the culture of the sea islands along the South Carolina coast.

Marion Wright Edelman, president and CEO of the Children’s Defense Fund, and Herman Gaither, an educator who served as superintendent of the Beaufort County Schools for a decade, are being honored on Hilton Head Island on Saturday. The Brick Baptist Church at the Penn Center on St. Helena Island is also being designated as a member of the 1862 Circle.

The Penn Center has served as a school for freed slaves, a Jim Crow-era industrial school and a retreat center for leaders of the civil rights movement.
