SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Democrats have chosen former Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon as their new party chair.

Corroon defeated Brigham Young University political scientist Richard Davis by receiving 68 percent of the delegate votes. He follows Jim Dabakis, who stepped down in March to address medical issues after serving as party chair for three years.

Corroon was a mayor of Salt Lake County for eight years until 2013. He ran for governor in 2010 and lost to Republican Gary Herbert by 32 percentage points.

He told the delegates Saturday at the state’s convention that he wants to ensure all of Utah’s counties have the resources they need to effectively recruit and support candidates.

Davis told delegates that he would bring in more Democratic Mormons.
