CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Officials say a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga student with an extensive leadership record has been named a Truman Scholar.

According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press (https://bit.ly/QOAZXS), Robert Fisher has been named one of this year’s 59 recipients of the national scholarship, which is named after former President Harry Truman and awarded to students with a strong record of public service.

Fisher is a political science major expected to graduate in May 2015. He is president of the Student Government Association and has served as co-chairman of Mayor Andy Berke’s Chattanooga Forward initiative. He also has served as a student commissioner on the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.

The award guarantees Fisher up to $30,000 for graduate study. Recipients receive priority admission and supplemental financial aid opportunities at graduate schools.
