LOS ANGELES (AP) - Workers have carefully removed remnants of a crumbling pipe that’s part of Los Angeles’ original water system.

The pipe was discovered earlier this month after construction crews demolished a restaurant near City Hall to make way for a new development.

Elected officials were on hand Saturday as the developer removed the pipe. The artifact will be preserved for future display.

City News Service says the developer paid for the salvage.

The pipe was part of a 90-mile network that fed water from the Los Angeles River to the burgeoning city starting in 1781.
