MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The youth turkey hunting weekend is underway in Vermont.

Young hunters must be age 15 or under to be eligible.

They also must be accompanied by an adult and have completed a hunter education course and have a hunting license, a turkey hunting license and a free youth hunting tag.

Regular spring turkey hunting season starts on May 1 and runs through May 31.

Last year hunters took a record 6,970 wild turkeys in Vermont, mostly during the spring season.

The state’s wild turkey population was estimated at 45,000 to 50,000 last fall.
