GAUTIER, Miss. (AP) - Jackson County Solid Waste Director Ronda Powell says a record 1,200 drivers participated in the county’s 11th annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day.
Powell tells the Mississippi Press (https://bit.ly/1j4jJJ0 ) that the average is about 800 cars.
Volunteers unloaded and sorted the rusty paint cans, old tires and other trash - some for recycling, some to be used as fuel, and some for disposal.
Powell says more than 120 cubic yards of paint and about 200 tires were collected. Organizers were still trying to get a handle on how much of the other materials were collected.
The collection was held in the parking lot of Singing River Mall in Gautier (GOH-shay). Powell says organizers need to start looking for a bigger but still centrally located spot.
