SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A popular bandstand on the Santa Fe Plaza is now off-limits to anyone without a permit.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports (https://bit.ly/1hvZzTf)city officials have put up chains blocking entry onto the popular gazebo.

Isaac “Ike” Pino, director of the city Public Works Department, says the action was prompted by a rise in loiterers who have left garbage and other “unsavory” items on the stage.

The bandstand has been an active gathering spot for locals since it was dedicated in 2004.

The area typically draws a crowd during a free concert series that takes place every summer.

Vendors say in recent months, more people have lingered in the area and end up fighting or smoking marijuana.

Business owners and city officials worry about the impression left on tourists.
