BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - The Des Moines County Courthouse steps in Burlington could be a cozy spot to endure next winter.

The Hawk Eye reports (https://bit.ly/QYrB41 ) crews are using jack hammers to demolish the steps, which will be replaced by ones that look the same but include a heating system.

County maintenance supervisor Rodney Bliesener says the project will cost about $42,000 but should pay off later because workers won’t need to dump salt on the steps, causing the concrete to crumble over time.

The money comes from a $1.5 million bond the county received in 2013 for capital projects.

After the current steps are removed, crews will built a rebar scaffolding and then place tubing in a snaking pattern on metal mesh. The tubing will connect to a boiler in the courthouse basement.
