SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Laguna Hills Mayor Andrew Blount is dropping his long-shot campaign for California governor, citing health concerns.
The Republican posted the message Tuesday on his Facebook page and confirmed it in an email to The Associated Press. He says he is “unable to put together the campaign that California deserves” and did not elaborate on the health issues.
Blount ranked a distant third in a recent Field Poll, with 3 percent of likely voters saying they would support him in the June primary. That’s far behind Gov. Jerry Brown and Republican state Assemblyman Tim Donnelly.
The top two vote-getters in June will advance to the November general election, regardless of party affiliation.
Blount’s name will remain on the primary ballot because the secretary of state already certified the field of candidates.
