NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - A jury has convicted a state correctional officer of misdemeanor assault for beating an inmate in front of other guards and prisoners two years ago at the New Haven Correctional Center.

Thirty-seven-year-old Diaab Amin of North Branford is set to be sentenced May 23 to up to one year in prison on the third-degree assault conviction. The New Haven Register reports (https://bit.ly/1h6GM6H ) the Department of Correction also fired Amin.

Jurors in New Haven Superior Court deliberated for less than an hour before finding Amin guilty.

A state police investigation found that Amin in July 2012 sucker-punched and beat 33-year-old William Laden, who was jailed for a domestic assault. Troopers say four months before the assault, Laden punched Amin in a parking lot fight in Meriden in an alleged drug dispute.
