PITTSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a man who drowned in a pond outside an upstate New York indoor sports venue was apparently checking on a pump when he slipped into the icy water.

Troopers say emergency crews were called around 6 p.m. Tuesday to the Sports Dome in the Rensselaer County town of Pittstown, along a rural stretch of Route 7 about 10 miles northeast of Albany.

Police say 45-year-old Matthew Philpott was found under the ice and removed from the water by emergency personnel. Efforts to revive him at the scene were unsuccessful.

Troopers say it appears Philpott was checking on a pump used to drain the pond when he lost his footing and fell in. An autopsy conducted at Albany Medical Center Hospital determined he drowned.
