SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A Spartanburg man has died in a drive-by shooting outside a fitness club.

Spartanburg County sheriff’s deputies were called to the club around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Sheriff Chuck Wright says Emery Lorenzo Williams, 64, was on his way home from church and was on the phone with his wife when he was shot. His car crashed just across from the parking lot of the club.

“I know this family. They do great work, and its’ a great loss to our community,” said Wright.

Wright says it appears the shooting was random. No arrests have been made.

Many people at the club said they heard several gunshots.

“I heard a ‘Pow! Pow! Pow!’ and then two more,” said Darlene Reeves, who said she was on a tennis court in the fitness center when she heard the shots. “Then I came out here and saw all that was going on. It’s just so weird. Oh my God, it’s horrible.”
