DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A Des Moines man shot by police who said he was trying to run them down has been charged with two counts of assault.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1k2GeAG ) 30-year-old Shawntee Deiyane Young was arrested and charged Saturday with two counts of assault by use or display of a dangerous weapon.

Police say Young drove up to the scene of a shooting officers were investigating March 20. Police say when officers tried to stop Young, he accelerated toward them. Three officers fired at Young, who was hit by one bullet and treated at a local hospital.

The three officers - Sgt. Chad Nicolino and Officers Andrew Becker and Seth Arganbright - remain on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
