SHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) - The Citizen Potawatomi Nation says its Cultural Heritage Center has been closed because of water damage.

The tribe in a news release says thousands of gallons of water flooded the building on Monday, damaging exhibits. Crews have been working the past few days to remove the damaged exhibits and floor from the building and prepare for the restoration process. The tribe says there is no estimate for the cost to repair the damage or a timeline for the repairs.

Chairman John Barrett says the damage is a terrible cultural loss for the Potawatomi people. He says it’s likely that the Cultural Heritage Center won’t be repaired in time for the tribe’s annual Family Reunion Festival in June.
