FAIRPORT, Iowa (AP) - Police have identified a body found in the Mississippi River in Muscatine County as a Davenport man who had been missing since December.

Davenport Assistant Police Chief Don Schaeffer told the Quad-City Times (https://bit.ly/1kq7kgD ) that an autopsy performed Wednesday and dental records proved the body was that of Willis Hughes. The 45-year-old man was last seen Dec. 21 at his Davenport home.

A fisherman found the body Tuesday morning along the Mississippi River near Fairport, just upriver from Muscatine.

Schaeffer says it’s unclear how long the body had been in the water, “but it did appear to be a lengthy period.”
