SILVER CITY, N.M. (AP) - At least a dozen riders were injured in crash in the Tour of the Gila in southwestern New Mexico.
Race spokeswoman Rebecca Reza says injuries were still being confirmed late Wednesday but two riders were airlifted to a hospital in Tucson, Ariz., and another 10 were sent to a local hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.
It’s unclear what caused the pileup as the riders raced more than 70 miles from Silver City to the ghost town of Mogollon.
The race continues Thursday with a 75-mile loop through the mountains around Silver City. A time trial and criterium will follow before the last stage Sunday - the brutal Gila Monster Road Race that covers more than 100 miles.
