PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities have identified a man who was fatally shot during an attempted armed robbery of an armored car in Phoenix last week.

Phoenix police say 34-year-old Lonnie D. Smith and another man approached two armed guards while they were working at an ATM on Friday.

They say the armed men tried to steal money from the guards before one of the guards opened fire.

Smith was pronounced dead at a hospital, but the other man escaped and remains at large.

Police say they later found a large rifle under a car at the scene and it may have belonged to the other suspect.
