ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) - The town of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, has its share of water woes.

Officials say water and sewer users are facing more than $6 million in maintenance needs at the water filter and sewer treatment plants. And more than $1.5 million is needed to fix pipe problems at a water main.

Engineer Red Dufresne tells the Caledonian Record (https://bit.ly/1hVuKrt) the town’s three filtration tanks at the Stiles Pond filter plant are made of painted steel, which is rusting into the water supply. That’s a $2 million replacement. It’s not clear how much longer the tanks will last.

Another problem is the Moose River water main, a primary water line that’s submerged, unsupported, in a river. Dufresne hopes it can be repaired before it ruptures.

Selectmen are discussing the problems.
