OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Five planes were rerouted to different runways after lights on some landing strips went dark at Oakland International Airport.

KTVU-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1oxwCje) the blackout happened around 8 p.m. Thursday along the south runways, the lanes closest to the water where large passenger and cargo planes both depart and land. The planes were rerouted to the north runways, creating a flight path over residential areas of San Leandro.

The lights were back on after 20 minutes.

Airport spokesman Scott Winter told the station Thursday night that officials were trying to determine the cause of the outage.

Winter apologized to San Leandro residents who were impacted by the excess noise.
