TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - A man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a $25,000 diamond from a Tempe jewelry store and claiming it was a prank.
Tempe police say 27-year-old Phuoc Tran is being held on suspicion of felony theft.
Tran told authorities he went Tuesday to the Arizona Mills Mall to look at a diamond because he planned to propose to his girlfriend.
While looking at the diamond, Tran reportedly turned around with it in his hand and out of the view of employees of Capri Jewelers.
Police say Tran said “April Fools” while handing back a cubic zirconia fake diamond and then quickly left the store.
Employees noticed the fake diamond and immediately called police.
Police say Tran tried to return the diamond on Wednesday, saying it was only a prank.
