PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A man has been sentenced for trying to kidnap a 10-year-old girl off a south Philadelphia sidewalk in an attempt caught on surveillance video.

KYW-AM (https://cbsloc.al/1lvKSEI) said Carlos Figueroa-Fagot was sentenced Friday to spend 17 to 34 years in prison for the July 2011 attempted kidnapping.

Figueroa-Fagot surrendered to police three days after the release of video footage showing a man approaching the girl as she walked in her neighborhood with her toddler brother. He tried to carry her off but fled after she struggled.

The judge who sentenced Figueroa-Fagot also praised the little girl, who was in court with her mother Friday.

Judge Alice Dubow said she hoped the child’s courage will continue to serve her as she tries to deal with the traumatic aftermath of the crime.
