CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Interstate 85 will be a bit wider in Cabarrus County soon.

The Charlotte Observer reported (https://bit.ly/1hbvsGo ) transportation department officials plan to open the additional two lanes in each direction this weekend.

The $125 million project adds two lanes to a 7-mile stretch from exit 49 to exit 55.

The northbound lanes are scheduled to open at 9 p.m. Friday. The southbound lanes are to open Saturday at 9 p.m.

Transportation Department spokeswoman Jen Thompson says motorists will still face some lane closures at night for a few weeks so crews can finish permanent lane markings.

The widening is part of a larger project that includes the completion of Interstate 485 by December.
