RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Two sure signs of spring are emerging this month: asparagus and farmers markets.

The Virginia Farm Bureau says the stalky vegetable is one of the first to appear each spring. At K&J; Farms in Mathews County, growers Karen and John Weaver say their asparagus should be ready for market next week. They sell their asparagus at the Williamsburg Farmers Market, which has already opened for the season.

Some farm markets remain open through the year, selling honey, maple syrup and other agricultural products. Among those markets opening this month are operations in Orange County, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Radford and Tappahannock.
