WEIRTON, W.Va. (AP) - Public health officials in Hancock County are considering much more stringent limits on smoking.
The county Board of Health’s current ban exempts casinos, bars, tobacco businesses and fraternal organizations.
The State Journal (https://bit.ly/1gwTLIW ) reports that the board is contemplating an end to those exceptions, as well as designated smoking areas outside.
Twenty-six of West Virginia’s 55 counties are smoke-free. Hancock County is one of only six counties in the state that hasn’t updated its smoking regulations since the 1990s.
About 30 people attended a recent meeting of the board to discuss a draft regulation.
Vince Azzarello is the human resources director at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort. He said the more stringent smoking ban could be devastating for the casino.
Others applauded the proposal, citing the dangers of second-hand smoke.
