HUTCHINS, Texas (AP) - The mayor of a Dallas-area town and eight past and present employees of the town’s public works department have been indicted on corruption charges.

A Dallas County grand jury accused Hutchins Mayor Artis Johnson on Monday of criminal conspiracy and abuse of official capacity. Hutchins City Secretary Janis Daniels is charged with theft, and the eight others are accused of engaging in organized criminal activity.

A Hutchins Police Department statement says the indictments capped a 16-month investigation by the department and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office of Public Integrity.

State Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas and Johnson’s attorney, told WFAA-TV of Dallas and Fort Worth that the mayor is innocent. Daniels didn’t return a message seeking comment.
