SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The state Environmental Protection Agency plans to hold several household hazardous waste collection events across Illinois this spring.
The collection days are scheduled at different times through the end of June. They will be in Blue Island, Countryside, DeKalb, Lewiston, Palos Hills, Taylorville and Wood River.
EPA officials say the collections are important to make sure that citizens can safely dispose of unused or leftover household products. The program started in 1989 and since then the state has collected more than 84,500 55-gallon drums of toxic materials.
The state also has four long-term collection facilities in Chicago, Gurnee, Naperville and Rockford.
Examples of products include paints, cleaners, antifreeze, motor oil, weed killers and batteries.
