A gunman who walked into the lobby of the Los Angeles Police Department said he had a “complaint” and then started firing at officers at the front desk.

Two officers were hit, but then returned fire and injured the gunman, LAPD Cmdr. Dennis Kato told The Los Angeles Times.

One officer was actually hit seven times — but three of the shots hit his armored vest and he escaped critical injury, medical officials at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center told the newspaper.

“He is in great spirits,” LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said, The Los Angeles Times reported. “Remarkable young man. Very, very lucky.”

The gunman, meanwhile, is also receiving medical treatment and is in stable condition.

A police spokesman said the gunman had simply said he had “a complaint” to make, and officers only had seconds to react.
