POWERS, Ore. (AP) - A southern Oregon sheriff’s spokesman says a 20-year-old man died after he jumped 65 feet from the Johnson Mountain Bridge into the Coquille (Ko-KEEL) River near Powers, Ore.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Pat Downing says Derrick J. Yarnell of Coquille told friends on Sunday evening that he was going to jump from the bridge into the water. Downing says the young man had done that successfully several times over the years. Friends tried to discourage him but he jumped anyway.

Witnesses say he jumped in but didn’t return to the surface.

Divers recovered his body Monday in about 20 feet of water.

The county sheriff’s office and medical examiner’s office are investigating.
