IMMOKALEE, Fla. (AP) - Officials say a Florida panther was killed by a vehicle in southwest Florida.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that the female cat was found west of Immokalee in Collier County on Tuesday. Officials couldn’t tell how old the panther was. The remains will be taken to a Gainesville facility for a necropsy.
This is the 10th Florida panther death of 2014, the 6th hit by a vehicle.
Florida panthers once roamed the entire southeastern U.S., but only around 160 remain in the wild.
