ANTIOCH, Calif. (AP) - Anyone who feeds wild cats on public property will be breaking the law, according to a new ordinance passed in a small San Francisco Bay Area city.
The Antioch city council voted 4-1 Tuesday to approve an animal ordinance that bans feeding feral and abandoned cats.
The city’s growing feral cat population had become a problem in recent months, with some residents putting out food on sidewalks and other right-of-ways. Opponents of the feeding ban wanted the city to create a trap, neuter and return program. Mayor Pro Tem Mary Rocha says city staff also should explore alternatives, including establishing feeding stations in a controlled area.
The Contra Costa County Times reports (https://bit.ly/1qjsHnK) once the ordinance becomes law in 30 days, people who have more than five cats on a property will need to get a permit.
