DETROIT (AP) - A groundbreaking is scheduled on a lighting system replacement project on Detroit’s southwest side.
Community leaders will join the Southwest Detroit Business Association and West Vernor & Springwells Business Improvement District Wednesday morning to kick off the $6.4 million infrastructure project.
The work entails replacing nearly 200 streetlights along 2.3 miles of West Vernor Highway. Construction will be done in two-block segments and is expected to be completed in November.
Southwest Detroit Business Association president Kathy Wendler says the streetscape project will improve safety and “serve as a catalyst for economic growth” in the area.
Funding for the project includes money from foundations, private donors and a $4.5 million Transportation Enhancement grant.
