GONZALES, La. (AP) - Authorities say a 25-year-old man, fleeing police, died after jumping into a bayou in Gonzales.

Police Sgt. Steven Nethken tells The Advocate (https://bit.ly/1hsH1ZW ) the body of Jerrick Lane was pulled from the water by Gonzales Fire and Rescue personnel a short distance from where he jumped in Tuesday night.

Nethken says Lane had fled as officers arrived to investigate a report of a man with a gun assaulting a woman.

Nethken says officers followed him into the bayou, but were unable to locate him.
