VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - A civil commitment trial is underway this week in Vancouver for a sex offender the state says is too dangerous to be released after serving his prison sentence.

The state attorney general’s office says 63-year-old Richard Hatfield is unable to control his sexually violent behavior.

The Columbian reports (https://bit.ly/1elqgPS ) he was convicted of two child sex crimes between 1982 and 1998. He finished his prison time in 2012 but has remained in custody for the commitment trial.

A judge will determine whether he’ll be locked up indefinitely for treatment at the Special Commitment Center on McNeil Island.
