MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) - Middletown police arrested a local man accused of leaving his two young children alone in his pickup truck with the engine running and the air conditioning on for about a half-hour.

Thirty-eight-year-old William Clayton was charged Monday with risk of injury to a minor and released on a non-surety bond. He’s due in Middletown Superior Court on Aug. 25.

Police say Clayton left his children, ages 2 and 4, in the truck as he went inside a building to pay a bill. Authorities say the children were properly secured in their seats.

Officials say charges were warranted because of the risk of leaving young children alone in a running vehicle.

A message was left Tuesday at a phone listing for Clayton. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.
