ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) - Oakland County authorities are investigating the suicide of a man who fled from police with a 5-year-old boy in his car.

The county sheriff’s office says the man fatally shot himself Monday after an hour-long standoff with deputies. They had safely removed the boy from the car before the shooting. They were trying to identify the boy and driver Monday afternoon.

Deputies had responded to a suspicious vehicle report in Rochester Hills. The car sped away and deputies found it after a chase.

Authorities saw the driver had a gun as they approached. They say he rolled down the window and put the gun to his head.

Deputies talked with him for about an hour. They say he shot himself after they tried to have him put the gun down.
