ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - A shelter dog is poised to join the Alexandria Police Department.

The dog is a female Belgian Malinois known as Zara. Its owners turned the dog in to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria last year because they weren’t able to care for it.

The shelter contacted the police department to ask whether Zara might be a candidate for its K-9 department. Zara has spent almost a year in K-9 school and will graduate on Wednesday. Police officers and shelter officials will speak to reporters about the dog’s new job.
