BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - Police in the central Illinois communities of Bloomington and Normal are warning residents following a string of vehicle thefts.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports (https://bit.ly/1lVnKOC ) there have been a dozen stolen vehicles reported since Aug. 1.

Bloomington police Sgt. Rick Beoletto is urging residents to keep their car doors locked and to remove their keys from their vehicles.

He says: “Vehicles thefts are often a crime of opportunity and if you remove that opportunity, they are less likely to happen.”

Beoletto says the vehicles were stolen “at random.” He says the majority happened overnight. In each incident keys were either in the vehicle or in a second vehicle located nearby.

Three juveniles were arrested Saturday in Normal on charges related to two vehicle thefts.
