MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (AP) - A Florence police officer is on paid leave after a standoff left a man dead in Muscle Shoals.

Chief Ron Tyler said Thursday the officer who opened fire during the incident has been placed on administrative leave while the case is investigated.

Tyler says paid leave is the standard procedure in such instances. He didn’t release the officer’s name.

A man was barricaded inside an apartment during a standoff that lasted more than three hours Wednesday. Police say the suspect fired more than 60 times at police and bystanders, and a woman was injured.

The shooting stopped after an officer fired two rounds.

Authorities say 35-year-old Reagan Lee Jones died in the standoff. Jones’ body was discovered inside the apartment when Muscle Shoals officers entered.
