FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) - A jury has found a Fort Dodge man guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting of a teenager at a party.

The Messenger reports (https://bit.ly/1tmr49M ) the Webster County jury reached the verdict Tuesday in the trial of 28-year-old Derrick McElroy.

McElroy was accused of shooting 19-year-old Brandyn Preston at a bonfire party in May 2011. Preston survived the shooting but was paralyzed from the shoulders down. Police say his death in January 2012 was caused by the injuries.

Prosecutors had argued that McElroy purposely shot into the party. His attorney said another man was responsible for the shooting.

The newspaper reports McElroy did not testify during the trial. Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 19.
