HONOLULU (AP) - The Army has honored a 25th Infantry Division soldier who saved the life of a 9-year-old girl at Pokai Bay.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser (https://bit.ly/1oUUCNc) reports Sgt. Maj. Gerardo Gonzalez was awarded the Army Commendation Medal last week for rescuing Martina Eram.

Gonzalez on June 15 aided a man who was struggling to keep the girl above water.

The Army says Gonzalez performed lifesaving procedures as he moved the girl toward shore.

On the beach, he continued lifesaving procedures until she expelled water and breathed on her own.

Gonzales credits his training kicking in for his actions.

Martina Eram’s sister, 11-year-old Gloria Eram, was found submerged in shallow water about a half hour after Martina was pulled out. Gloria was rushed in critical condition to a hospital, where she died.
