PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) - A group of Michigan judges has given its highest honor to an Oakland County judge.

Joan Young is the first woman to receive the 2014 Judicial Excellence Award, which is named for the late Hilda Gage.

Young was a judge in Oakland County Probate Court before her appointment to the Circuit Court in 1997. She now is the presiding judge in a specialty court that deals with people with substance abuse.

Her colleague, Judge James Alexander, says Young cares about the court system and her community.

The Gage award is given by the Michigan Judges Association.
