YORK, Maine (AP) - A group that wants to legalize marijuana for recreational use by adults has submitted petitions to the town of York.

Citizens for a Safer Maine collected more than 900 signatures. That’s far more than the 641 valid signatures of registered town voters needed to qualify for the ballot.

Marijuana activists who submitted the petitions Wednesday began collecting signatures after the Town Council vote 3-2 against putting the measure to a town vote.

A similar measure will appear on the November ballot in South Portland. Organizers are also hoping to put the measure on the ballot in Lewiston. The Marijuana Policy Project says the municipal votes are a tuneup for a statewide referendum drive on the legalization of pot in 2016.
