FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - The Farmington Police Department and the Navajo Nation are in talks to allow Farmington police officers to make arrests in the sovereign American Indian territory.
The Daily Times reports (https://goo.gl/U4YQrT) that Farmington police recently announced it was working to create a memorandum of understanding with the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety.
Under the agreement, Farmington officers would be allowed to pursue suspects into sovereign territory and bring them back to non-Navajo territory without filing for extradition.
Farmington police Chief Steve Hebbe said discussions are in the preliminary stages, but his department is “driving toward signing it.”
Hebbe said his department’s memorandum would likely be modeled after a similar one the Nation signed with New Mexico State Police almost two years ago.
